Installation Instructions for PhotoMate / ZMate for Windows ME, 98 & 2000

- Important Notes -
  • During the Driver Installation process, the USB cable must NOT be connected before Windows has started.
  • ** This product will NOT work in systems running Win95 or NT **
Important Note

If you are using a USB keyboard, it is recommended that you plug the reader into the main system USB port and not into the keyboard USB socket.

Your PhotoMate/ZMate Reader kit should contain the following:
  1. PhotoMate or ZMate Reader.
  2. Installation/Driver CD
  3. Installation Instructions

(PhoneMate Combo Reader shown)

  1. Make sure the USB Reader cable is NOT connected to your computer's USB port.
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. Look at the CD that came with your USB Reader.
    1. If the CD is labeled "Dane-Elec PhotoMate and ZMate Readers" go to step 4.
    2. If the CD is labeled "Dane-Elec USB Card Readers" perform the following steps:
      1. After the system has completed the boot process and Windows has started, insert the CD into the CD-ROM Drive.
      2. Open "My Computer" from the Windows desktop
      3. Locate and double-click to open "USB Drivers (X:)" ("X" is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive)
      4. You should see three folders. Double-click to open the folder that correspondes to your USB Reader:
        • For PhotoMate Combo Readers, open "CF-SM USB Combo Reader"
        • For PhotoMate CompactFlash Reader, open "USB CF Reader"
        • For PhotoMate MMC Reader, open "USB MMC Reader"
      5. After opening the appropriate folder, locate and double-click on the "setup.exe" icon.
      6. Skip ahead to step 7.
  4. After the system has completed the boot process and Windows has started, insert the CD into the CD-ROM Drive.
    1. If the CD AutoRun feature is enabled, the window below will appear on your screen.

    2. If the CD AutoRun feature is disabled:
      1. Double-click to open "USB Readers Software (X:)" in "My Computer"
      2. If the window above does not open, locate and double-click on "setup.exe"
  5. Click on "INSTALL DRIVERS" to display the window below.

  6. Click on the image of the USB Reader that correspondes to your USB Reader.
  7. Select the language of your choice and click "OK".

  8. The Installation Wizard will begin. Click "Next"

  9. Click "Yes" if you agree to the terms of the License Agreement.

  10. On the "Choose Destination Location" screen, click "Next" to use the default installation location (recommended) or use the "Browse" button to select a different installation location.

  11. On the "Select Program Folder" screen, click "Next" to use the default Program Folder (recommended) or create or select a different Program Folder.

  12. "Start Copying Files" will appear on your screen. Click "Next".

  13. "Setup Status" will appear with a status bar. The status bar should advance until all file are copied.

  14. "Setup Complete" will appear. Click "Next". (If you want to view the "Read Me" file, click "Yes, I want to view the Read Me file.")

  15. "Installation Wizard Complete" will appear on your screen. Click "Finish".

  16. If Windows asks if you want to restart your computer, you must restart your computer to complete the driver installation. After restarting your computer, continue the installation on the next step. If Windows does not ask to restart your computer, the driver installation is complete.
  17. Attach the USB Reader to one of your computer's USB ports. The USB Readers may not function correctly with USB Hubs or USB ports meant for USB keyboards.

Using the PhotoMate / ZMate USB Reader

WARNING!

If you are attempting to read a memory card that has data on it and you are asked "Do you want to format?", you will lose all data that is currently on the card if you do format it.

  • CompactFlash:
    1. Insert an CompactFlash module in the slot (top slot of the PhotoMate Combo) of the USB Reader (The lip of CompactFlash card should face down when inserting it into the reader.) You do not need to turn off your computer to insert a memory device into the card reader.

    2. On the Windows desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
    3. You will see that you now have a device called "Removable Disk (X:)"
      • "X" is the drive letter of the new removable device and may vary.
      • If you have PhotoMate combo reader, you will see two "Removable Disk" drives. The first drive is for the CompactFlash slot, the second is for the SmartMedia slot.
    4. Double-click on the "Removable Disk".
    5. The CompactFlash device can be used like you use a floppy disk. Double-click on the files or folders that you want to view or store files to the CompactFlash module.
  • SmartMedia:
    1. Inserting SmartMedia cards:
      1. The PhotoMate Combo Reader reads SmartMedia cards with the gold leads facing up. You do not need to turn off your computer to insert a memory device into the card reader.
      2. The ZMate Reader reads SmartMedia cards with the gold leads facing down. You do not need to turn off your computer to insert a memory device into the card reader.
    2. On the Windows desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
    3. You will see that you now have a device called "Removable Disk (X:)"
      • "X" is the drive letter of the new removable device and may vary.
      • If you have PhotoMate combo reader, you will see two "Removable Disk" drives. The first drive is for the CompactFlash slot, the second is for the SmartMedia slot.

  • MultiMedia Card:
    1. Insert the MultiMedia Card into the slot of the PhotoMate MMC Reader with the gold leads facing down. You do not need to turn off your computer to insert a memory device into the card reader.
    2. On the Windows desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
    3. You will see that you now have a device called "Removable Disk (X:)"
      • "X" is the drive letter of the new removable device and may vary.
    4. Double-click on the "Removable Disk".
    5. The MultiMedia Card can be used like you use a floppy disk. Double-click on the files or folders that you want to view or store files to the MultiMedia Card.
